At The Table with The Dice Tower - Playin' the Classics

06. August 2024 um 12:00

Tom, Julie, and Eric start looking forward to their next convention adventures now that Gen Con is done (though, since we're recording before Gen Con, we can't discuss anything that happened there just yet). We focus on the joy of playing older games, especially with players who haven't experienced them before. We delve into the Tale of Horror vault, as well as answer a listener question about how to pick what we play, and what to do when we choose poorly. Finally, we close the show with Roses, Thorns, Hula Hoops, and Advice for Eric.

00:48 - News and Announcements - Dice Tower West and Cruise, Dice Tower District

#323: Wilmot's Warehouse

Von: Pickaxe
06. August 2024 um 12:00

Who is this Wilmot? What wares is he housing? Few answers are offered. We are merely told, rather imperiously, that we work at his warehouse. Sure, we have weekends off, but on occasion the fickle demiurge Wilmot commands us to speak in monosyllable, or move seats, or hide secrets from our colleagues. One shudders to imagine what terrible fate befalls those foolhardy enough to flout his edicts.

Harvest, War Story: Occupied France, Dorfromantik: The Duel

05. August 2024 um 18:00
Cute, but deadly! We used to dance under that name but you could also use those three words to describe today’s selection of games. Harvest is a farming worker placement game so cloyingly sweet you could squeeze condensed milk out of it. Is it good? Jury’s still out. War Stories: Occupied France is the unlikely combination of Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective and Undaunted - how does that even work? We’ve got the scoop. And finally… Dorfromantik: The Duel. Last year’s adaptation of Dorfromantik to board game form was low key our favourite light tile layer. But now naturally come the spin-offs and we’ve got some takes. Boardgames To Go 230 - Next Generation Boardgamers (with Tim Dolloff)

Openers:

Mark: First in Flight Tim: Arcs Closers: Tim: Changing enjoyment (and ratings) of games Mark: Is it possible to go to too many game events?

Tim

@Denga

If you've followed me for any time, especially on our Discord server, you've heard me talk about a couple things: my appreciation for the "new" podcast Board Game Hot Takes, and my observations of how the energy of our hobby has shifted from when I joined it. I get to combine both of those topics into one episode by inviting one of the three BGHT hosts, Tim, to join me on the mic and use him as a representative of the "next generation" of boardgame hobbyists. He chuckles at that characterization, pointing out he's not that much younger than me, and has been playing boardgames for a few years. But that still makes him the New Kid on the Block compared to an old fart like me, and I think it shows in the types of games he & I both love.

That's what we talk about, how the bulk of the hobby may be broadening and unchanging (think about Ticket To Ride, Catan, and Azul at Target stores and on Amazon), but the energetic, active hobbyist part of the hobby appears to be compelled by crowdfunding, plastic figures, and the BGG Top/Hot games lists. I'm not trying to say that's a problem, but I am certain that's it's a difference. At the same time, there are some nice advantages for old-timers like me, whether it's improved game distribution, production enhancements (e.g. double-layer boards), and the most robust online multiplayer options we've ever seen. -Mark

#322: Michael Walker Revolutionizes Physical Therapy

30. Juli 2024 um 12:00

We here at SVWAG take pains to differentiate between two conflated ideas. We say "approachable" for rulesets that are easily learned and internalized, reserving the similar-sounding term "accessible" to refer to games that are usable for people with disabilities.

Time for our thoughts on the upcoming games that are coming out at Gen Con based on the ones we were lucky enough to play. Got to admit, some solid games and for all age of gamers. We have the light entry with In the Footsteps of Marie Curie to the heavy hitter in Evenfall or Rock Hard 1977. But looking for middle of the road, check out River of Gold. Need a little coop in your life, then try Mandalorian Adventures. And if the old grey matter needs some work, Kronologic might be something you are looking for.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg at Gen Con as we head out this week and will report back some of our other favorites when we are there.

Thanks for listening and if at Gen Con, please say Hey if you see us.
