Our upcoming convention, July 25th-27th 2025, is in its planning stages! We have a venue but nothing much else yet. Not even a name! Suggestions welcome. Mark quite likes So Very Wrong About Games Fun Times Good Vibes Only Trans Rights Are Human Rights Boardgame Jamboree, but he worries that it might be too pithy. Few things are off the table! Special guests? Maybe! Fabulous prizes? Well, prizes, definitely. More like obligatory prizes.

This week's guest is Head of Production at GMT Games, Kai Jensen. We talk about getting games out of the door, development and grief...but which games did she choose?
Opener: Everyone knows Aldie, right? Feels like we do. Scott Alden, the man behind BoardGameGeek, is one creative entrepreneur, let me tell ya. Anyone could've thought to make a central website where boardgamers come for information and community, but it takes more than a good idea for something to be reality. For 25 years Aldie has been adding features, listening to comments, growing the hobby, and doing way more than most to enhance boardgaming around the world. I can't believe it's been so long since I've had him on the podcast. I'll be sure to do it again soon.
Here Scott joins me to talk about the BGG Hall of Fame, where 25 famous titles were inducted into an inaugural collection. Jennifer Schlickbernd headed up the project with Aldie's blessing, and Candice Harris was responsible producing & editing the awesome videos that accompanied this launch. I was pleased to be invited to be the initial jury that came up with the games, and also pleased with the end result. We each had our own experiences & different appreciations for various titles, but it was a group effort--including much group deliberation--that resulted in the final list. Schacht The Monkey con After the interview, I go on to talk about most of the games I played at a recent, regional convention: EsCon. The games all have one thing in common--they were all designed by Michael Schacht. As long as my friends are onboard, I really have fun focusing on something at events like these. Sometimes it's SdJ winners, or trick-taking games, or pre-2000 boardgames. This time it was focused on a single designer. As EsCon host Steve Paap likes to label these things, we called it our Schacht The Monkey con.
Closer: The following month's episode will be this podcast's own 20th anniversary. Can you believe it? Dave Arnott will be on to interview me and I can tell stories (some old, some new) about the past two decades behind a laptop and inexpensive microphone. If you've got questions or otherwise want to me to talk about something, send in your feedback now. Thanks. -Mark
On this galloping episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Tom and Matt are chatting about the wonders of nature in Spectacular, engaging in frivolous spending with Winner’s Circle, and taking Bilbo for a spin in The Fellowship of the Ring: The Tricktaking Game. There’s even time to get Stuck In A Lift for just a little while…
Thanks for listening everyone! Have a great weekend!

Today, Jamie is joined by Honorary Founder Rodney Smith to chat about their adventures into a variety of exciting new hobbies. They kick things off with a dive into the immersive world of tabletop wargaming, teasing their upcoming trip to Washington, DC, for the highly anticipated Circle DC convention. From there, they segue into their shared love for vinyl collecting, swapping stories about some of their all-time favorite albums. Naturally, no hobby chat would be complete without a detour into the realm of coffee and espresso, a passion both share with great enthusiasm. Finally, they wrap things up with a lively discussion about Rodney’s latest obsession: Gunpla. Rodney's enthusiasm is so contagious that, despite Jamie's resistance, it’s only a matter of time before he’s fully drawn into the world of Gundam model building.
Tom complains about the cold before we all discuss forms of Table Talk. What just bends the rules, and what breaks the game? We share a new Tale of Boardgaming Horror, a couple of questions from the mailbag, and some new Roses, Thorns, and Hula Hoops.
If you can choose to be the regular version or the spicy version, you obviously choose the spicy version. I mean, sure, the capsaicin may sting, but one assumes that the canonical version is caliente. Put another way, would you prefer "SVWAG" or "SVWAG en fuego?" The choice is clear. It is a corollary of sorts to Winston Zeddemore axiom that when someone asks you if you are a god, you say yes.
Games Played Last Week:
01:33 -Under Our Sun (Maximilian Lichtner and David Poluda, tabletopper games, 2024)
We got to attend Dice & Diversions this month and the drive was worth it. The location was great, and the gamers were so well taken care of by the team that if you are in the Southeast, consider going next year. The date for 2026 hasn’t been announced as they work on contracts with hotels, but just know it will be in the first quarter. There was plenty to do if you are into board games or RPGs with plenty of opportunities to join others as people were continuously looking for players.
One of the games we played was a re-implement of one we played many moons ago that I really enjoyed. Beyond the Horizon uses similar mechanics found in Beyond the Sun, but it is its own game and should be judged as such. We compare the two in this episode and found that the mechanics in one we enjoyed more than the other. I think for people that have played both, your playstyle will help you determine which you like more. For me, Beyond the Horizon is more my style with the map versus the space majority control board.
Thanks for listening and appreciate all the support
In this episode, Conor and Dana Banana are back for their first episode of 2025, while Lauren has so much to talk about, she returns for another chat in back-to-back episodes.
Lauren has us with our mouths open as she talks about her latest trick-taking game that has the weirdest theme we’ve heard in a while. Conor has settled into his role as a hobo as he rummages through his bindle looking for goodies at 2am in Vagrantsong. Meanwhile, Banana has fallen for Ryan Laukat as she tries to save the pack-turtle in her first experience with Red Raven Games in Creature Caravan.
They also recap last week's Question of the Pod, all before sharing some news as to what's got them fired up!
New Question of the Pod: What was your biggest gaming surprise of last year and what did you enjoy about it?
