Picture it now; you’re sitting in a lovely english garden in the midst of summertime. You’ve got a delicious cup of iced Bovril in your hand, and the sun is warming the grass under your feet. Life is bliss. Suddenly, a tall sweaty man and a short sweaty boy leap the fence - cracking open warm cans in mid-air - fistfuls of board game bits clutched in their four greasy hands. It’s time to podcast, baby.
In this undeniably very 115th episode of the Shut Up and Sit Down podcast, Tom and Quinns resume the age-old tradition of shirtless podcasting - kicking off with a chat about The Deadlies, before pinging over to Super Skill Pinball: 4Cade. Then, Quinns gets wistful about his foray into Fields of Arle, and we end on a highly controversial chat about Undaunted: North Africa. Strap in.
Things got a bit heavy last week, so let's take things down a notch by exploring the other end of the scale. Light games are just as important for a board game collection, after all. We discuss what light games offer that heavier games don't, and mention some of our recent favourites. Before we lighten the mood, we talk about Reef, Clans of Caledonia, and Tutankhamun.
02:34 - Reef 09:18 - Clans of Caledonia 15:00 - Tutankhamun 22:01 - Light Games 23:48 - Werewolf 25:37 - Vast: The Crystal Caverns 26:28 - Ingenious 27:21 - The Quest for El Dorado 30:40 - Twice As Clever 33:24 - Dice Fishing: Roll and Catch 36:11 - Cacti 37:35 - The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine 38:04 - Deep Sea Adventure 38:49 - Flamme Rouge "Complexity bias in BGG" by Dinesh Vatvani: https://dvatvani.github.io/BGG-Analysis-Part-2.html
It's an Arkham Horror love-fest when Conor and Adrian join the show! The team hits the ground running with some important breaking news before launching into their Sizzling Games for the week. Conor and his partner have been working through Machi Koro Legacy, Adrian explores the card drafting mage-maker that it Res Arcana, and Steve falls in love all over again with Terraforming Mars.
Many of our listeners in Australia and overseas are still in isolation so the team discusses the pros and cons of playing boardgames online - specifically TableTop Simulator. How does it compare to Tabletop Arena, Tabletopia, or even dedicated gaming apps? With more virtual gaming conventions on the horizon, and even our regular online gaming on the BoardGame BBQ Discord, we discuss the easiest ways to overcome the entry barriers and get amongst the online gaming action.
The Board Game Bracket is going off! We resolve the match-up of Sheriff of Nottingham vs Great Western Trail, before Conor and Adrian go toe-to-toe in two separate battles: Spyfall vs It's A Wonderful World, and Arkham Horror (3rd Edition) vs Mysterium. And finally Adrian and Conor get to join forces to pump up Arkham Horror: The LCG, while poor Inis goes unsupported. Or does it?
In our Kickstarter segment Conor has backed Dead Reckoning and is eyeing off The Shivers and Perseverance. Meanhile, Adrian has backed the dice-drafting game Daimyo: Rebirth of the Empire.
We never thought it would happen, but Steve finally has a clean slate by fulfilling his oaths on Ecos: First Continent and Forgotten Waters. In fact, it's clean slates all 'round because Adrian brought Deep Madness back to the table (but found that his gaming tastes have changed since buying it), and Conor fulfilled his oath by playing SteamRollers (even if it was a few hours before he started recording). The team then swear fresh oaths by committing to Chronicles of Crime (Adrian), Euphoria: Build A Better Dystopia (Conor), and in a dramatic podcast-definig twist - Arkham Horror: LCG (Steve).
The News: (1:10)
Sizzling Games: Machi Koro Legacy (2:08), Res Arcana (13:52), Terraforming Mars (25:30)

Ben sits down with Jerry and Gaby of The Board Game Snobs to talk the roles games play in their lives and why the 80s were the high water mark for cinema.
Tom joins Suzanne and Mandi to discuss Tekhenu, Mini Express, My City, Fort, 5er Finden, and Aqua Mirabilis. A quick trip to the digital zone... and we wrap with a Game Pie all about games featuring dessert.
Walker is a force of nature, a pent-up human-shaped mass of pure rage. The only outlet that can sate his furious destructive impulses is the ecstasy of the uninhibited flick--the catharsis of venting all of his power on a disc and then watching it careen around the board (then off the table, off someone's skull, off the floor, under the bookshelf, and then embedded in the drywall). He ten thunders with laughter, even as Huey informs him he missed his target and Dewey calls an ambulance. Is it a wonder, then, that Mark favours flicking games that encourage a modicum of restraint?

Jules steps into the hosting role and after a minute we are already asking "Steve who?" He is joined by Sarah and Mike for another cracking episode in the world of boardgaming. In the Sizzling Games segment Mike fell in love with the amazing artwork and clever gameplay of Everdell, Sarah and her crew played the trick-taking co-op The Crew, and Jules became a ruthless troll In The Hall Of The Mountain King.
What is it about space that captures the imagination? The team discusses their favourite space-themed games this week and why the theme works so well in boardgaming. It seems that there are so many game styles, mechanics and even different franchises that can work in space. And of course, when evil-Jules beats you, no one can hear you scream...
We reveal the winner of the Aeon's End Legacy vs Azul, before Jules and Mike face off in the latest Board Game Bracket: Cosmic Encounter vs Gizmos. Cosmic Encounter might be incredibly clever, but apparently Gizmos has balls. Make sure you visit our social pages and vote for your favourite game to make sure it comes out on top!
In the Kickstarter segment Sarah is looking forward to receiving Rome & Roll next month. Perseverance has caught Jules' eye, but his heart is set on Windward which is expected to arrive next month as well. And Mike received his first-ever Kickstarter game; the wacky cure-all card game Trust Me I'm A Doctor.
Finally, in Swear An Oath Sarah fulfilled her oath by bringing Obscurio off the shelf, but found it really needed a traitor to make it more fun. Mike couldn't manage to get King Of Tokyo to the table due to the COVID lockdown so he played it online instead and came out victorious! And Jules just can't get enough of the Quacks of Quedlinburg successor: The Taverns of Tiefenthal. The gang then all swear new oaths: Race For The Galaxy: Alien Artifacts (Sarah), Tiny Epic Galaxies (Mike), and Lords of Scotland (Jules)
Sizzling Games: Everdell (1:14), The Crew (9:15), In The Hall Of The Mountain King (19:00)

Monique from Before You Play is with us to get heavy. We're discussing the allure of heavy games, and who better to talk us through them than a Vital Lacerda fan who loves to not just play them, but teach them? We dig into why we enjoy the occasional heavy game, and why you should too! Before we play, we talk about DURIAN, Animal Kingdoms, and Brass: Birmingham.

Ahead of the release of Stonemaier's new game Pendulum, Jamey was kind enough to take time out from his busy schedule to talk about his early experiences in the industry, his feelings about Kickstarter, and finding his place in the hobby. Jamey even weighs in with his Sizzling Game and his view on our upcoming match-up in the Board Game Bracket. And of course, there was no way Steve was going to let the opportunity pass to talk about Scythe!
In episode 62 Jamie welcomes Honorary Founders Rodney Smith of Watch It Played and Marty Connell of Rolling Dice and Taking Names to bring back play the This or That Game! We talk about conventions, gaming awards, Project Winter and in the game, we go into movies, board games, miniatures games and more.
