298 | Building Community In Board Gaming | with Jason and Frank West

Frank West, the founder of City of Games and designer of Isle of Cats, joins to discuss cultivating enthusiastic, positive communities that buy games, have fun, and manages itself against negative elements. We get into a lot of facets of this one, particularly the idea of the Five, Five, and Ninety Percent. Five percent of communities are superfans, five percent are utter jerks, and ninety are people who want to hang out and have fun. How do we access and cultivate that ninety percent in positive ways? How can we tell when an angry person is among the Ninety and just upset, or if they are actually just a jerk not worth engaging? We get into that and a lot more in this one. Much art is discussed this week, from French Romantics, to pirate stuff, to conspiracist vision boards, to whatever Walker is doing when he uses clothespins on felt. Mark wonders whether he can justify leaving in dead air and calling it "bold use of negative space," but the deeper worry is that too many people would prefer the silence.

Episode 180: Special Guests - Kenny Michael-Otton and Leigh Perrott

08. März 2022 um 00:50

Games and Wasps and Blips, Oh My!

On this episode Adrian and Sarah continue Oceania Month with two Australian designers: Kenny Michael-Otton and Leigh Perrott. Surprisingly the pair have similar backgrounds in playing board games as kids, and also being heavily involved in competitive gaming which set them on the path of the designing games. Kenny and Leigh share the inspiration behind their games, as well as their approach to creating a specific gaming experience for players.

Next the gang kick off the 2021 Board Game BBQ Awards and discus the first three categories: Best Solo Game, Best Family Game and Best Party Game. You can find the link to the nomination form on all of our socials including Discord, Twitter, Instagram and on our Discord Community. Nominations are open to anyone in the community for three weeks. Facebook, Discord, Instagram, Twitter. Nominate in all 9 categories, or just a few. Once nominations close on Sunday 27th then we take the most-nominated game in each category and they become the official nominees for the BBQ Awards. Then we hand it over to our esteemed panel of judges; our Patreons; to vote. And this will all culminate in the BGBBQ Awards Night which once again will be filmed for YouTube, and we hope to have some surprises on the show as well.

In the Board Game Bracket we settle the last match-up, Viticulture vs Quacks of Quedlinburg, before we cue up the next battle: Twilight Imperium 4th Ed vs Targi. To make sure your favourite goes through to the next round make sure you vote on our socials.

Finally, in Swear An Oath Adrian painted the White Lion and also played the prologue in Kingdom Death Monster, while Sarah taught Adrian how to play Eclipse, and also played Arkwright: The Card Game solo. New oaths include Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring (Adrian), Mind MGMT (Sarah), The Others (Kenny), and to have the next physical version of Grimwald ready for the Sydney Game Day in April (Leigh).

#173 - Bashing Our Brains On Bitoku

04. März 2022 um 17:52

In this spiritual episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Matt and Tom are talking about just one game - a game that has sat alone on Tom’s ‘To-Play’ shelf like a bottle of brown sauce in a wetherspoons sauce caddy. That’s right, it’s Bitoku, a game about splodging sauce all over a beautiful forest until various bears, otters and raccoons come to lick of all the liquid from the branches and leaves: yum yum yum.

296 | How Board Game Creators Feel About Kickstarter | with Jason, Danni Loe, And James Hudson

Danni Loe from Pandasaurus Games and James Hudson from Druid City Games rejoin the show to talk about the benefits and increasing drawbacks of producing games through Kickstarter. KS provides upfront cash and immediate feedback from fans, which is great. It also has huge issue with lack of moderation, the move to blockchain, and overall unresponsiveness to the very creators it says it wants to highlight. James and Danni break all of that down for you. Boardgames To Go 199 - Top Ten Revisited

Opener: 7 Wonders: Architects, France's Game of the Year winner (the As D'Or) Do you have a Top 100 list? How about just a Top Ten, and do you update it every year? I have a sort of list, but it's the same one I've had for over twenty years. In fact, I ran through it very quickly on the first episode of this podcast back in 2005! (No need to dig up that old fossil, but my show had to start somewhere. ) I've been thinking about a new top ten of more recent games, but I'm not ready with that. Perhaps that will be in a future show, because there ARE plenty of modern titles that I really enjoy. It would be fun to talk about them, in part to contrast them against the "hotness" on BGG and Kickstarter that I often can't connect with. Again...that's a future show. In THIS episode I thought my original top ten was worth discussing all over. In some cases they are games I love just as much as ever. Others are more sentimental favorites, not really making it to the table any longer. In a few cases I think the games represented of a type of game that I still enjoy, and there are newer examples. #203: Difficulty in Co-ops

Von: Pickaxe
01. März 2022 um 12:00
We're always on the lookout for new potential taglines here at SVWAG, as our earlier efforts "that one where the guy talks to that dude" and "we shout into a can so you don't have to" have been deemed insufficient. "We like it hard" was put forth by Walker, but the editorial staff are afraid it is apt to be misconstrued. "We weaponize children" was rejected for the opposite reason, namely that it might be correctly interpreted. Specificity tends to get us into trouble, which is why we have kept "a boardgaming podcast about boardgames" for as long as we have.
