#225 - Golem Down!

07. Juli 2023 um 18:26

Note: Sorry about the audio on this one! Some very jacked up mics produced a lot of room noise that was hard to scrub. We’ll have this fixed in a couple episodes!

In this clay-based episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Tom and Matt are talking about a cluster of games they’ve played together recently. First up is a lengthy chat about Golem - the crunchy, Italian-designed eurogame based on the folkloric Jewish automata (it’s quite good!). Then, a couple of very speedy chats about Resist! (a fantastic solo game where you play as the SPANISH revolution) and Stomp The Plank (a great push your luck game we recently reviewed).

Have a great weekend, everybody!

#283: Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal

06. Juli 2023 um 09:41

Not all are as blessed as we are by the gift of truly original thought, and so many turn to others for inspiration. Whether it's Newton standing on the shoulders of giants, or stealing from our rich neighbour Xerox, many great ideas are born from what has come before. Before we make the inspired choice, we talk about Masters of Renaissance: Lorenzo il Magnifico – The Card Game, Innovation Ultimate, and Dawn of Ulos.

#269: Credibility in Crowdfunding

Von: Pickaxe
04. Juli 2023 um 12:00

Two crowdfunding campaigns stand before you. One only tells lies, the other only tells the truth. Both claim to be innovative and to be able to deliver on time. How do you decide which one to back? Or wait, a crowdfunding campaign launches but during the funding period every individual component is replaced by a new one; is it the same campaign? Or wait, there are five crowdfunding campaigns on one side of a track and one campaign on the other, and this trolley...

Boardgames To Go 217 - Moving to New Places...and Boardgaming (with Dave Gullett)

David G.

@davebo

Openers: • Mark: Maquis and Canopy • Dave: Earth

My friend Davebo has been on the podcast many times, but not for a while. During the time he's been away he decided to sell his California home and relocate to North Carolina, both to be by his oldest kid, now married, as well as to start a new chapter in life. In the podcast he talks a little about those reasons, and what it's like to be a boardgamer who uprooted himself from local groups and friend networks to be in a new place, finding & meeting new people. Of course, gamers do this all the time, but I'm more familiar with it happening earlier in life, when you go off to college, get your first professional job somewhere else, maybe move again to buy a home & start a family. Or like me, maybe you had a career move at some point, like when I moved 300 miles from Norcal to SoCal, leaving behind MY local game group. At that time, I wasn't much more than thirty years old, and finding new gamer friends was something I needed to do...but I don't recall feeling especially challenged by it. Now, though, I can anticipate another move when I eventually retire, and finding new friends when I'm in my sixties feels different. Perhaps it shouldn't, but I'm a little daunted just thinking about it. Dave's not in his sixties, but he's not in his thirties, either. He's now done what I will need to do eventually. Of course, it matters what sort of community you find yourself in, how expansive your hobby is, and other factors. Online gaming was always around, but really took off during the pandemic. That's an interesting way to meet new people AND stay in touch with the gamers "back home." Closers: • Dave: "High five" games • Mark: Can we get more boardgames that tie in to landmarks, places to visit, and a sense of history? -Mark

#224 - Welcome to EARTH

30. Juni 2023 um 14:37

Note: We misquote Will Smith's line in Independence Day a couple times in this podcast - not realising the pretty charged history of misquoting it in such a manner! Apologies for this, it was not our intention to offend!

In this loamy episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Tom and Matt are taking a little wander through the hills and valleys of… a rather complicated engine builder. We’re talking about recent BGG darling Earth and its soil-based engines, alongside a few brief chats about seance-based deduce-em-up Phantom Ink and mud-based clean-em-up Dirty Pig. Matt also has a few words to say about the student games we got to briefly drop in on at the recent UK Games Expo!

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Undaunted: Battle of Britain, Hamlet, Autobahn

30. Juni 2023 um 08:00
Sometimes you sit down to play some board games for a future podcast episode and you find yourself not particularly digging any of them? It happens. It’s a thing. It could happen to you. This week it happened to us. Whilst we weren’t especially jazzed about Hamlet, didn’t find Undaunted: Battle of Britain worth the trouble and at least one of us really didn’t get on with Autobahn, that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t like them either. Or maybe you’ve already played them and disagree - dear listener, you should write in. If you have personal experiences to share about any games discussed in this episode or any topic that's dear to your heart - we’d love to hear from you.
