Great Excavations
Maximum Apocalypse
(18:55) Then they talk all about Grand Gamers Guild's Origins experience.
This week's guest is the fames war game designer, Brian Train. We talk about public service, writing about games and historicity...but which games did he choose?
Jorge Velez, professional illustrator, discusses topics related to art and creativity. We talk about how comparison destroys creative people, how to make your own luck, the different paths to becoming a pro artist, best practices for finding and working with artists, and a whole lot more.
Shelley and I check out two quick card games that our friend Ken brought over to try, then delve more deeply into a heavier game.
We started with
Boast or Nothing by Yeon-Min Jung from A.ger Games and SUNNY BIRD
then used our animal-laden bikes to gain points in
Velonimo by Bruno Cathala from 25th Century Games, Asmodee, and MEBO Games
then en with something heavier with
Bamboo by German P. Millan from Devir

My friend Davebo has been on the podcast many times, but not for a while. During the time he's been away he decided to sell his California home and relocate to North Carolina, both to be by his oldest kid, now married, as well as to start a new chapter in life. In the podcast he talks a little about those reasons, and what it's like to be a boardgamer who uprooted himself from local groups and friend networks to be in a new place, finding & meeting new people. Of course, gamers do this all the time, but I'm more familiar with it happening earlier in life, when you go off to college, get your first professional job somewhere else, maybe move again to buy a home & start a family. Or like me, maybe you had a career move at some point, like when I moved 300 miles from Norcal to SoCal, leaving behind MY local game group. At that time, I wasn't much more than thirty years old, and finding new gamer friends was something I needed to do...but I don't recall feeling especially challenged by it. Now, though, I can anticipate another move when I eventually retire, and finding new friends when I'm in my sixties feels different. Perhaps it shouldn't, but I'm a little daunted just thinking about it. Dave's not in his sixties, but he's not in his thirties, either. He's now done what I will need to do eventually. Of course, it matters what sort of community you find yourself in, how expansive your hobby is, and other factors. Online gaming was always around, but really took off during the pandemic. That's an interesting way to meet new people AND stay in touch with the gamers "back home." Closers: • Dave: "High five" games • Mark: Can we get more boardgames that tie in to landmarks, places to visit, and a sense of history? -Mark
It's Bonus Show time again and this time we have a Q and A that we hope you'll enjoy. These questions were sumbitted by our Patrons who also got to hear the show 3 months early!
This Game is Broken is a comedy board game panel show with Matthew Jude, Dave Luza, Paula Deming, Nick Murphy and Mike Murphy. We play a lot of nonsense games full of role playing and trivia as well as other fun stuff which can be found at the links below.
This Game is Broken is eternally thankful to our Sponsors Restoration Games Find them at https://restorationgames.com/
Note: We misquote Will Smith's line in Independence Day a couple times in this podcast - not realising the pretty charged history of misquoting it in such a manner! Apologies for this, it was not our intention to offend!
In this loamy episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Tom and Matt are taking a little wander through the hills and valleys of… a rather complicated engine builder. We’re talking about recent BGG darling Earth and its soil-based engines, alongside a few brief chats about seance-based deduce-em-up Phantom Ink and mud-based clean-em-up Dirty Pig. Matt also has a few words to say about the student games we got to briefly drop in on at the recent UK Games Expo!
Sometimes you sit down to play some board games for a future podcast episode and you find yourself not particularly digging any of them? It happens. It’s a thing. It could happen to you. This week it happened to us.
Whilst we weren’t especially jazzed about Hamlet, didn’t find Undaunted: Battle of Britain worth the trouble and at least one of us really didn’t get on with Autobahn, that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t like them either. Or maybe you’ve already played them and disagree - dear listener, you should write in.
If you have personal experiences to share about any games discussed in this episode or any topic that's dear to your heart - we’d love to hear from you. Please write to: elaine@nopunincluded.com

Ambie and Crystal discuss a couple games they played recently, including Dog Park: New Tricks, Blitzschnell!, and My First Escape Game: The Magical Forest. Then, we talk about real life escape rooms games and what we love and don't love about them (and how that's similar to our board game interests).

You've heard of the film "Gone in 60 Seconds" right? Well this episode is nothing like that, but we do concentrate on games that play under 60 minutes. Adrian continues as our first player to talk about those little gems in our collections and why every gamer should have them.
FIRST PLAYER: Adrian OTHER PLAYERS: Becky & Ian
OVERVIEW In this episode you'll learn: - How the new hotness "Earth" is landing within the group - Ian is celebrating a win at Endless Winter recently - Adrian is on a culling mission getting rid of 25% of his collection - all about games that play under an hour and why they are key in anyone's collections - whether we would rather play the same game 8 times or 8 different games in one day - more about the excitement levels for The 24 Hour Board Game Marathon.
LINKS REFERENCED IN THE SHOW The team are still looking forward to the 24 Hour Board Game Marathon this year which is being held at the Shrubbery Hotel in Ilminster on 22nd July at 9am. Get your tickets and more information here - https://www.the24hourboardgamemarathon.co.uk/

It is a well-known fact, observed by Infinity: the Game, Across the Spider-Verse, and Undaunted: Battle of Britain, that a Sikh man in uniform is always a good look. So here's to pilot Singh in his Hurricane! Not to mention Sergeant Singh in his power armour, and Captain Singh in his Spider-Man movie (in my heart, it is his film).
Games Played Last Week:
01:01 -The Defence of Procyon III (Dávid Turczi, PSC Games, 2021)
11:02 -That's Not a Hat (Kasper Lapp, Ravensburger, 2023)
14:49 -Beyond the Sun: Leaders of a New Dawn (Dennis K. Chan and Joseph Summa, Rio Grande Games, 2023)
19:50 -Thunder Road: Vendetta (Dave Chalkers, Brett Myers, Noah Cohen, Rob Daviau, Justin D. Jacobson, Jim Keifer, and Brian Neff, Restoration Games, 2023)
This week, we discuss hype in games and what that means on all different levels. Conors get put in the corner with the chaos gods in Eric Lang’s Warhammer game. Sarah is trying to stop the Suffragettes movement in America back in 1848. Adrian is back with his ice theme obsession and trying to play an area control game which is very out of his wheel house. We also got to talk about a game that we played at the Brisbane Game Day, that’s not yet published but it’s so good we wanted to share it with you. link is here: Queen Bees
