232: A Critique Of Previews With The Space-Biff

Dan Thurot the Space-Biff returns to the show to continue our critical reflection of what we are doing as board gaming media and content creators. In this episode, we take a deeper look at board game previews. We all know the epithets - hype train, cult of the new, etc. Yet, Dan and I both engage in preview content. We examine our approach and our desire to maintain healthy relationships with ourselves, publishers, and our audience. Episode 120: Teotihuacan Expansions – Late Pre-classic Period and Shadows of Xitle, Architects of the West Kingdom, Red7, The Mind

13. Juli 2021 um 02:40

Episode 120 - Teotihuacan Late Pre-classic Period and Shadow of Xitle , Architects of the West Kingdom, Red 7, The Mind

On this episode Steve, Conor and Mike bring new meaning to the word 'chaos'. Once the dust settles, the lads discuss board gaming statistics - do they keep gaming stats? Why? How do you use/refer to them? Which of our hosts is anti-stats?

In the Sizzling Games segment Steve has explored the expansions to Teotihuacan, Late Pre-classic Period and Shadow of Xitle, and he gives us a rundown on how they significantly improve the game. Conor dived deeper into Architects of the West Kingdom with the Age of Artisans expansion. Meanwhile Mike has been playing the ever-changing Red 7, and also the mind-melding The Mind.

In the Bracket Battle 2.0 we tally up the scores and find out if Too Many Bones or Dwellings of Eldervale took the chocolates. Then, we set-up the next battle: Ganz Schon Clever vs Raiders of the North Sea. Make sure you head to our socials and cast your vote to make sure your favourite goes through to the next round.

Finally in Swear An Oath, Mike has Stone Age still on the shelf and Marvel Champions ready to go, Conor played Raiders of Scythia but hasn't got around to Galaxy's Most Wanted just yet, and Steve played Circadian's First Light and also achieved a new personal best in Hadrian's Wall. New oaths sworn include Scape Goat (Mike), Cloud Age (Conor), The West Kingdom Tomesaga (Steve) and Galaxy's Most Wanted (Steve).

#146½ - Teaching Complex Games & Talking Go with In Sente

11. Juli 2021 um 14:28

Apologies for the lateness of this week's podcast! This site's own Tom Brewster has fallen ill with Covid-19. Tom's okay, but in his own words, "It sucks."

In this emergency episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down podcast, we're presenting one of our favourite panels from the most recent AWSHUX, our "Away SHUX" online convention. In it, Quinns has a terrific talk with his favourite Go YouTuber, In Sente, a.k.a. Michaela Galluci.

The pair shared their favourite tips for teaching complex games to people, but eventually succumbed to the temptation of just talking about Go. Did you know that it's a good game? It's a good, good game. If you missed Quinns' review of Go last year, definitely check it out.

We hope you're having a great weekend, everybody. Your regular podcast will be back next week.

230: A Critique Of Content Creation With The Space-Biff

The Space-Biff, Dan Thurot, stops by the show to chat about... what in the world are we doing! We discuss the concept of "content creation", both in terms of its largely negative roots and how it has been appropriated and used by today's board game media creators. We also discuss related topics like meaningfulness, burnout, discovery, and others that have relevance for the human beings that make the board gaming media we all enjoy. 07. Juli 2021 um 07:55
Awwww yeah, the Founders are back and celebrating the success of their 2021 Kickstarter campaign! The gang starts the show by talking about some of the games they've been playing including Canvas, Marvel Champions, Cryo, Tapestry, Unmatched, Labyrinthos and Cartographers. Then Don and Jamie get deep into a feature review of Oath Chronicles of Empire and Exile by Cole Wehrle. Then, as usual, Tony T collects and presents the best of the best tabletop gaming news you'll ever heard. Then the gang ends the show with a Short Topic Extravaganza including questions from listeners regarding using chess clocks, getting deeper into the theme of a game and losing your cook at the table.
