#223: Ye Olden Games with Mark Bigney from So Very Wrong About Games

28. April 2022 um 08:33

It's easy to get caught up in the cult of the new, but there are so many amazing games that came out before we were even in the hobby. Mark Bigney of So Very Wrong About Games joins us to look at the games we love from yesteryear, and other older games we really ought to play. And stick around for even more special appearances after the show! Before we go back in time, we talk about Sobek: 2 Players, Phantom Leader Deluxe, and Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition.

#210: El Grande

Von: Pickaxe
26. April 2022 um 12:00
Preparation is important. We very carefully do our advance research here at SVWAG, but occasionally mild errors do creep in. For this week, Mark studiously crafted notes and observations on such issues as four octave vocal ranges, Nickelodeon celebrity culture, and whether boredom of a third party constitutes necessary or sufficient conditions for breaking up with one's girlfriend. Sadly for Mark, Ariana was not the Grande under discussion this week, so he was forced to begin anew.

Games Played Last Week:
01:12 -Clinic Deluxe Edition (Alban Viard, AVStudioGames, 2019)
05:36 -Contra: The Board Game (Adam Sadler & Brady Sadler, Blacklist Games, 2022)
07:08 -Furnace (Ivan Lashin, Hobby World, 2021)
08:38 -Pulsar 2849 (Vladimír Suchý, CGE, 2017)
10:59 -Settlement (Oleksandr Nevskiy, IGAMES, 2021)
12:43 -Race for the Galaxy (Thomas Lehmann, Rio Grande Games, 2007)
16:23 -Décorum (Harry Mackin, Charlie Mackin, & Drew Tenenbaum, Floodgate Games, 2022)
19:49 -Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition (Sydney Engelstein, Jacob Fryxelius, & Nick Little, Stronghold Games, 2021)
23:34 -Factory 42 (Timo Multamäki, Dragon Dawn Productions, 2021)
31:05 -Nidavellir: Thingvellir (Serge Laget, GRRRE Games, 2020)
33:31 -Dune: Imperium--Rise of Ix (Paul Dennen, Dire Wolf, 2022)

#222: Are You the Gatekeeper?

21. April 2022 um 10:12

There are many ways that we can accidentally contribute to gatekeeping in the hobby - pushing those who want to embrace it away. Whether it's to those outside, or even, bizarrely, to those already in, we break down the subtle (and unsubtle) ways we do it, whether or not we mean to. Before we find the keymaster, we talk about San Marco, Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, and Ghosts of Christmas.

309 | Is It Ok to Rate a Game on BGG If You Have NOT Played It? | with Jason

Nice, easy discussion topic this time. Lots of passionate folks, for good or ill, rate games on the Board Game Geek website without having played it, sometimes even before it's released. Some folks are really annoyed at that practice, for what I think are obvious reasons. I go the other way. I say, rate away! I break down both sides of the discussion and invite others to join in. Designing Open World Games with Ryan Laukat

20. April 2022 um 06:24

Ryan Laukat, designer of Sleeping Gods, talks about designing open world games.

Sleeping Gods is a phenomenal example of how a board game can pull off the open world experience, and we do a deep dive into basically every aspect of its design. I’ve also been working on an open world game of my own over the last couple years, so we get into the ways we overcame similar issues.
