ETHIOPIA VS. FASCIST ITALY 1935-1937 – A Prelude to the Second World War.

Fascist Italy’s 1935 invasion of Ethiopia set the world on course for World War Two. The failure of the League of Nations to deter Fascist aggression led to policies of appeasement, the rise of the Axis, the Spanish Civil War, and Hitler’s march into the Rhineland. In this easy-to-play, straightforward solitaire game, you are the beleaguered Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I (1892-1975). Take charge of Ethiopia’s defenses, call up troops, and call on the League of Nations as Italy tries to enlarge her empire at your expense. Send your regional “Ras” warlords into battle, organize partisans, deploy your limited elite forces, and endure Italy’s criminal use of mustard gas.

Trench Raid is a single-player game set on the Western Front in World War One. The player assembles a group of 10 raiders and plots their course on a map towards the enemy lines on the other side of No Man’s Land. With 12 different raid objectives and 20 random events that can take place during the crossing, no two playthroughs will be exactly the same.

The game also includes rules for campaign play — whether their raid was successful or not, the soldiers who make it back to their trench lines relatively unscathed will steadily get better at raiding, learning through experience how to survive.

Empire of Grass: The Conquests of Gengis Khan is a solitaire card-wargame of the Mongol invasion of Eurasia in the twelfth century under Genghis (Chinggis) Khan. You play the Great Khan, commanding his armies as he conquers territories, recruits other nomads into his army, and either garrisons or razes cities.

The map of your conquests is made through placing cards which represent the regions of Eurasia that the Mongols conquered (or tried to). As you expand you have to take care as neighbouring kingdoms may appear to challenge you and your allies can desert or even rebel. An optional game allows for an uncertain world with the cards randomised.

Chicago ’68 is a game about the riots during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, set against the social upheavals of America in the sixties. After the Summer of Love, the Summer of Tear Gas. On one side: the Youth International Party (aka The Yippies) and the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam (aka the MOBE), on the other: Mayor Daley, the Chicago Police Department and the National Guard. The game unfolds over the course of three days during the Democratic National Convention – from the 26th to the 29th of August, culminating in the nomination of a presidential candidate. There are two victory conditions: one is to gain the most media exposure favorable to your side and the other is to influence the delegate vote and bolster your political aims. The Demonstrators may pivot between these two objectives while the Establishment, although more powerful, must fight and win on both fronts.

Chicago ‘68 supports 1 – 4+ players, featuring asymmetrical card actions and tableau activation. Typical duration of play is about 45 minutes per player.

Nightfighter Command is a WWII soloitaire narrative game where you defend Southern England against the Nazi bombers. Based at Middle Wallop or West Malling RAF base you will be directed to fly against German bombing raids to protect various Naval bases, towns and cities. At first you may struggle with unreliable equipment and inexperienced ground controllers but as you gain experience your skills and eventually the equipment at your disposal will also improve – if you live that long!

Battles of the American Revolution Tri-Pack II: Monmouth, Germantown and Newtown is the second compilation of earlier releases from GMT Games’ Battles of the American Revolution Series. These are tactical level battles at the regimental level with a map scale of approximately 200 yd/hex.

Additions to the original releases include:

Europe at War 1940: Solitaire, the sister wargame to Pacific War 1942, places the player in the role of the Axis high command during the first 18 months of World War II and focuses on the European Theater of World War II.

The game introduces some new concepts important to the war in Europe. Each side has a limited number of tank units to add strength to some front armies. The axis has a paratrooper unit that can help with hazardous operations. Choosing when and where to place them can be a major decision. Also control of air spaces on fronts becomes an important factor. And, ports on sea zones are affected by sea zone control. Crossing bodies of waters on a front is a major effort.

As the axis do you try to take London before turning east against the Russians? Should you help out the Italians in the Balkans? Or do you turn your tanks loose in the deserts of North Africa?

Eine neue Folge Kartongeflüster ist da! Dieses Mal öffne ich die Schachtel von Thebai erschienen bei Pegasus Spiele – und wie immer weiß ich zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht so ganz genau, was mich genau erwartet.

Gemeinsam werfen wir einen ersten Blick auf das Spielmaterial, stöbern durch die Anleitung und versuchen herauszufinden, wie die einzelnen Materialien und Mechanismen zusammenspielen könnten. Welche Rolle spielen die Würfel? Was hat es mit den verschiedenen Leisten auf sich? Was sind das für Holzplättchen? Und worauf kommt es am Ende eigentlich an? Manche Dinge erschließen sich sofort, andere bleiben zunächst ein kleines Rätsel. Und manchmal liege ich bei meiner Mutmaßung einfach daneben.

Genau das macht für mich aber auch den Reiz von Kartongeflüster aus. Es geht nicht darum, die Regeln perfekt zu erklären oder das Spiel abschließend zu bewerten. Stattdessen nehme ich euch mit auf meinen ersten Entdeckungsprozess – mit allen richtigen Vermutungen, aber eben auch mit den falschen Fährten, auf die man beim ersten Blick in eine Schachtel schon einmal geraten kann.

Worum geht es aber thematisch in Thebai? Nach dem Sturz von König Ödipus herrscht in Theben alles andere als Ruhe. Seine Söhne Eteokles und Polyneikes liegen im Streit um die Herrschaft, während die Zitadelle Kadmeia ziemlich ramponiert dasteht. Genau hier kommen wir ins Spiel: Wir übernehmen eine einflussreiche Adelsfamilie und versuchen, unseren Einfluss auszubauen. Dafür wird gebaut, politisch taktiert, die Götter werden um Hilfe gebeten und nebenbei sollte man auch noch dafür sorgen, dass Theben nicht gleich wieder untergeht.

Inzwischen habe ich Thebai aber bereits gespielt und kann sagen, dass ich bei meinen ersten Eindrücken nicht immer richtig lag. 😀 Aber genau das gehört dazu und zeigt, wie spannend es sein kann, ein Brettspiel Stück für Stück zu entschlüsseln. Erst auspacken, dann Reglestudium und am Ende dann der Aha-Effekt, wenn man merkt, dass die Holzplättchen (Kadmeia-Steine) eine ganz andere Funktion haben als zunächst gedacht.

Wenn ihr also Lust habt, gemeinsam mit mir in eine neue Spieleschachtel einzutauchen und die ersten Geheimnisse von Thebai zu lüften, dann hört gerne in die neue Folge von Kartongeflüster rein. Ich wünsche euch viel Spaß beim Zuhören!

During the First World War, the British and French made a secret agreement to carve up the Ottoman Empire – literally drawing on a map in red and blue ink – without respect to the peoples, culture, or history of the region. This would have devastating effects over the next century.

In Sykes-Picot, two players take on the roles of infamous diplomats Mark Sykes and Francois Georges-Picot, using red and blue markers to carve out territories to control and to influence on a dry-erase map. Trick-taking card play and table-talk negotiations drive the proceedings, with the winner of each trick choosing one of the two cards to implement, and the loser consoling themselves with the remaining card. Each player has a set of hidden objectives they’re trying to achieve. Players may be as co-operative or as competitive as they wish in pursuit of these goals.

Tonally, the game is light, reflecting the distance and cavalier attitude of these imperialist powers. We feel there’s something horrifying in that, and this approach captures some of that horror.

The Rock of Chickamauga is the next game in the Black Swan Series and follows closely on the heels of A Most Fearful Sacrifice. Using the same proven game system, The Rock of Chickamauga covers the entire Battle of Chickamauga, fought from September 18th through the 20th, 1863 in northern Georgia. The Union Army of the Cumberland, under William Rosecrans, is driving south from Chattanooga, hoping to envelop and trap Braxton Bragg’s Confederate Army of Tennessee in its vise. But Bragg anticipates the maneuver, pulls back and then counterattacks the overextended Union forces. They meet along Chickamauga Creek, the “River of Death”, in an epic struggle.

This scenario-driven, two-player war-game utilizes the ACW operating system called the Black Swan System, which is closely related to the Blind Swords game system first introduced in the game The Devil’s To Pay!. This version of the system is specifically designed to handle larger-scale battles yet keep rules overhead low. players will trigger activations by Corps instead of by lower-level formations but they still have tactical decision-making choices by needing to determine which Divisions get activation priority. Players will use card draws rather than chit pulls.

There are a million ways to die in the Arctic, so carefully choose your supplies and read the ice well, and you just might secure the coveted prize of discovering the fabled Northwest Passage.

Lonely Cairn is a solitaire game about finding the Northwest Passage in the mid 1800’s. Modelled and based upon the ill-fated Franklin Expedition, players will need to equip their expedition and carefully chose what to take with them into the arctic. They will then sail though a channel of icy locations, facing deadly encounters along the way. They must reach the exit by the end of 8 turns, or face being locked in the ice forever.

Battles in the East (BITE) is a series simulating World War II Eastern Front battles. The system rules are an evolution of the SPI classics Panzergruppe Guderian, Army Group South and Cobra. Unit integrity bonuses include Soviet Corps and vary to show the increasing Soviet cohesion and decreasing German cohesion as the war progresses. HQ units provide higher level combat support and supply advantages to corresponding units in range. BITE also incorporates standardized scales (unit size, distance, time) for easy comparisons. While the series rules allow players to play many games with the same core rules, the scenario rules add unique situational elements of each battle. Each volume includes two battles from one year with two copies of the charts and tables as well as scenario rules and set-up cards for easy reference. Battles in the East Volume 2 offers a strategic simulation of pivotal 1941 Eastern Front conflicts, including the fierce battles at Uman and Tula.
