MyMiniFactory marketing head leaves to launch growth agency for tabletop publishers

02. Oktober 2026 um 16:30

MyMiniFactory marketing and brand head Anjuli Smith has left the 3D-printing marketplace to launch her own tabletop agency, whose work will include helping smaller board game publishers find distributors and expand internationally.

Smith left MyMiniFactory at the end of September to focus full-time on her newly-launched Tabletop Growth Partners, which will primarily target the TTRPG and wargaming sectors with marketing, digital growth and business development services.

But she is also looking to offer international business development support for smaller board game publishers, using contacts built up over 13 years in the industry to introduce them to distributors and support them through sales and negotiation meetings.

Smith told BoardGameWire she is currently in talks with three board game publishers about working with them at the Spielwarenmesse trade fair in Nuremberg next February – including new Canadian publisher Acolyte, which focuses on co-op and semi co-op games and is looking for UK and European distribution.

She said, “An available network is a huge blocker for many smaller and newly launched publishers. Getting your games in front of the right people who know how to market them (and will in fact market them) is key to expansion.

“With over 5,000 new board games releasing annually I think it can be pretty daunting for smaller publishers who lack the massive budget of The Op’s Flip 7. Being able to use someone who people already know and trust to open a door for you is a huge win.”

Smith said her work with those publishers would include introducing them to distributors she already has relationships with, approaching potential new distribution partners and organising their meeting schedules ahead of the show.

She will also sit in on meetings for publishers that request additional support, including helping with negotiations and expansion plans.

Smith said, “I have a huge network of industry colleagues I have grown over the last 13 years and I think it’s important to give back and not gatekeep that.

“I like being able to introduce folks to each other and watch them both grow and succeed because of it.”

Tabletop Growth Partners will also offer marketing strategy, digital storefront optimisation, crowdfunding and subscription support, and representation at international events including SPIEL Essen, PAX Unplugged, GAMA Expo and UK Games Expo.

Smith told BoardGameWire she believes the cost of attending international shows could make that kind of support particularly valuable to smaller publishers.

Smith said, “For a small publisher the costs of flights, hotels, and a booth are huge. Asking them to then take time away from sales to talk to others simply isn’t an option.”

She added that many board game studios and publishers had opportunities to expand their communities, but lacked the time, knowledge or money to pursue them themselves.

“At the end of the day they are creatives, they should be creating their next bestseller, not getting bogged down with admin and endless meetings. Let me do that.”

Smith joined MyMiniFactory after previously working as a purchasing assistant at Asmodee UK and at Asmodee Entertainment’s fiction imprint Aconyte Books, and most recently served as the 3D-printing platform’s head of marketing and brand.

Her work there included business development around bringing established tabletop properties into 3D printing, including Steamforged Games‘ Warmachine and Modiphius Entertainment‘s The Elder Scrolls.

Smith said that while she is based in the UK, she has set her working schedule to cover US mornings because she expects “a vast majority” of the agency’s clients to be based there.

The agency has also signed up as an ambassador for MyMiniFactory’s Soulcrafted initiative, which was launched to champion human-made creative work amid the rapid growth of generative AI.

Codenames makes Netflix debut after streaming giant approached CGE for licence – then hired it to develop the game instead

02. Oktober 2026 um 15:44

Czech Games Edition‘s huge-selling word guessing game Codenames has made the jump to Netflix, with the publisher developing a new digital version of its biggest-selling title for the streaming giant’s push into TV-based social gaming.

CGE told BoardGameWire that Netflix originally approached it about licensing Codenames, before changing tack and asking CGE to develop the digital version itself after trying out the publisher’s existing mobile app for the game.

Codenames Party can be played by Netflix subscribers through their TV by using their phones as controllers, and includes a new ‘party’ mode allowing up to 10 people to compete as individuals rather than in teams.

The deal provides a new source of players for a game which is already closing in on 20 million physical copies sold, a CGE spokesperson told BoardGameWire, adding that “the branding benefits and opportunity to reach a new audience” were important to the publisher.

Codenames and its spin-off titles already account for about 80% of CGE’s annual sales – although company marketing manager Ondřej Skácel told Czech business publication CzechCrunch the new deal would not transform CGE financially, saying revenues from the tabletop version of Codenames remained on another level.

CGE was paid to develop the Netflix version of the Vlaada Chvátil design, and will also receive ongoing licensing payments, that report added – with Skácel telling the outlet “at first, we didn’t believe it and thought it was some sort of hoax” when Netflix got in touch.

Codenames Party on Netflix

Codenames Party’s visual style has prompted questions from some players about whether generative AI was used in its creation – something CGE strongly denied to BoardGameWire.

The spokesperson said, “There are no AI assets in the game or in marketing materials. We saw those comments, but we want to clarify that the new art style was made by illustrators and graphic designers who spent countless hours on it.

“In general, we use human graphic designers and illustrators on all our projects. We’re in turbulent times, but we’re still enjoying the whole ‘old-school’ process of making games.”

CGE also left open the possibility of bringing more of its games to Netflix or similar platforms, telling BoardGameWire, “We’re always open to any new opportunities. If we find a good fit with our games and the specific platforms, we would definitely consider it.”

Codenames was first released by CGE in late 2015 and quickly became an international hit, winning the coveted Spiel des Jahres prize the following year.

The game has since spawned a string of spin-offs and licensed editions, including Codenames: Pictures and two-player cooperative version Codenames: Duet.

CGE has increasingly experimented with bringing Codenames into digital formats, beginning with the free browser-based Codenames Online in 2019 before launching a mobile adaptation developed by its CGE Digital team in 2024.

That app, which clearly made an impression on the Netflix team, introduced asynchronous multiplayer, matchmaking, progression and new game modes rather than simply recreating the tabletop game.

Clank! Digital: Die Brettspiel-App jetzt vollständig auf Deutsch

Clank!

Was steckt hinter Clank!?

CMON scraps $2.1m NFT game maker investment, three months after betting on deal to expand revenue, remain ‘relevant’

24. Juli 2026 um 00:35

Financially-troubled board game publisher CMON has terminated its planned $2.1m investment in NFT video game maker Blissful Link, three months after pinning its future on a push into digital game development and blockchain-based projects.

CMON’s board had planned to transition the company’s titles such as Massive Darkness and Super Fantasy Brawl Reborn into “high-quality digital assets” through the investment, saying the move was necessary for it to “continue to be relevant in the games industry and to expand the group’s revenue stream”.

But the board game publisher has now terminated the deal according to a new filing it submitted to the Hong Kong stock exchange, saying the conditions necessary to complete the investment had not been fulfilled.

CMON did not disclose which conditions had not been satisfied, nor whether it intends to pursue alternative investments as part of the announced digital strategy.

The conditions of the deal included CMON being satisfied with the results of due diligence of Blissful Link’s finances, assets and legal structure – particularly around its Capverse game – approval of both parties, and warranties related to the agreement “remaining true and accurate and not misleading at completion”.

Capverse is a play-to-earn video game built on blockchain technology, in which players buy NFT ‘Sumer’ characters to battle with online.

The proposed investment would have valued Blissful Link at more than $95m. Blissful Link made a loss of about $197,000 in 2024, on revenues of just over $408,000, and had net liabilities of about $889,000, according to unaudited figures provided by CMON in April. It did not include finances for 2025.

CMON was mocked in multiple places online after it announced the NFT deal in April, with commentors largely expressing that they believed the deal was not financially sound, and questioning CMON’s decision to bank on NFT and web3 technology to fix its financial problems.

The veteran crowdfunding giant’s $23m losses across 2024 and 2025 were almost 5.5-times larger than its profits from the preceding nine years combined, and have pressed the company into a string of asset sales as it attempts to fulfill more than $14.3m of as-yet-undelivered crowdfunding campaigns.

Those IP sales included parting with its most famous and profitable title Zombicide – which has raised more than $40m on Kickstarter since its 2012 launch – to Asmodee, as well as Blood Rage, Rising Sun and Ankh to Tycoon Games.

It followed those by selling the IP for former Mythic Games titles Anastyr and Hel: The Last Saga to Don’t Panic Games in September, and parting with the lucrative Cthulhu: Death May Die IP to Asmodee a month later – the latter a series which has raised almost $10m from backers to date.

Earlier this year an independent auditor hired by the company questioned whether it CMON had the resources to stay in business for the foreseeable future, saying the publisher’s $19.9m annual loss, its net liabilities of more than $3.5m and contract liabilities of over $7.5m “indicate a material uncertainty which may cast significant doubt about the group’s ability to continue as a going concern.”

CMON’s directors had a different view, however, saying in the company’s 2025 financial report that it “should be able to continue as a going concern” thanks to a trio of factors.

They include financial support from some of the directors “sufficient to finance CMON’s working capital requirements”, the roughly $2.4m proceeds from selling its Singapore office that it received in January, and about $1.25m of gross proceeds from a successful share sale in February.

CMON’s hefty liabilities are largely due to its eight undelivered crowdfunding campaigns, which are not recognised as revenue on the company’s books until they are fulfilled to backers.

They include DC Super Heroes United, which raised more than $4.4m, and DCeased, which brought in over $2.5m. Both campaigns were initially due to be delivered last year, but are now expected to be delivered in Q4 of 2026, according to CMON’s latest estimates.

DCeased || CMON crowdfunding image

CMON also has several undelivered pre-order campaigns on its books, including Super Fantasy Brawl Reborn and the Assassin’s Creed Role Playing Game. The company is currently in the process of fulfilling a trio of other pre-orders including Dune Desert War, Cthulhu: Dark Providence and Marvel United: Witching Hour.

The company pulled the plug on crowdfunding launches and new game development in April 2025, citing the economic uncertainty created by US tariff hikes – which at the time had reached 145% for China, where the vast majority of hobby board games are manufactured.

But CMON announced in March this year that it plans to relaunch its halted crowdfunding operations later in 2026.

NFTs, which emerged out of cryptocurrency technology such as Bitcoin, exploded into the public eye in 2021 thanks to big-money speculative purchases – such as an NFT of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey’s first tweet selling for $2.9m.

That speculative bubble had already burst a year later, however with many of the digital assets involved losing more than 90% of their peak value. The Dorsey tweet NFT, for example, received a high bid of $6,800 when it was put back on the market in April 2022.

Other board games that have pushed into NFTs are few and far between, with one of the highest profile examples being SolForge Fusion, which allows players to mint decks as digital assets in addition to playing the game in physical form.

Two years ago CCG project Wonders of the First had to pull a $1.4m campaign from Kickstarter after falling foul of the crowdfunding platform’s ban on NFTs. The game went on to raise about $1.2m after relaunching without NFT content.

Clank Board Games To Be Exclusively Published By Dire Wolf

09. Juni 2022 um 23:38

June 9, 2022 – Clank board games to be exclusively published by Dire Wolf Games. Renegade Games was the original publisher of one of the best push-your-luck games out there but Dire Wolf is stepping in and taking the full role over.

“When we first dipped our toes into the board game waters several years ago, we weren’t entirely sure what we were getting into…or just how big a part of our creative lives tabletop would become,” said Scott Martins, President of Dire Wolf. “Our friends at Renegade provided some much-needed guidance and support for our early board game co-publishing efforts, and we’re grateful for everything they did to help bring the game to market. Since then, Clank! has grown as a product line and we’ve grown as a company. We’re very excited about where Clank! is heading in the future, and how it fits into the bigger picture of tabletop publishing from Dire Wolf.”

“Coming from videogames, making Clank! was a whole new kind of challenge,” said Paul Dennen, VP of Design at Dire Wolf, and the creator of both Clank! and Dune: Imperium. “The journey here has been a fun one, and we’ve got some exciting twists and turns ahead for the noisy thieves, and I think fans will really enjoy where we’re heading next.”

Clank Board Game Versions

Going forward, future Clank! products will be published by Dire Wolf, and digital Clank! content will be available via the free Dire Wolf Game Room app. Current digital Clank! content will migrate to the free Dire Wolf Game Room app, available from Steam, the App Store and Google Play.

There have been a total of 3 Clank stand-alone games including Clank!, Clank! in Space and Clank! Incorporated that have built on the initial concept of getting in and getting out as quickly as possible and with the most precious treasure as possible. Each one has a fresh take and hosts several different expansions. In addition to push-you-luck, it has really utilized the deck building mechanic and is often seen as one of the best there as well.

Publisher Dire Wolf has been heating up the board game scene. In addition to new Clank titles, they are behind the incredibly popular Dune Imperium and they are huge into digital implementations. There they have Pokemon TCG, Raiders of the North Sea, Yellow & Yangtze, Sagrada, Root, The Fox in the Forest, Game of Thrones the Board Game and Lotus.

  • fördert Spielen an Schulen umfassend
